|| Keynote Speaker: Tim Andrews:
I earned my M.S. in Early Childhood Special Education from Portland State University in 2000. Fresh out of graduate school, I took a position in a ‘behavior’ or therapeutic classroom – my brother was the speech and language pathologist – I thought he would help me with paperwork! I didn’t have any idea what I signed up for. For seven years I taught in this classroom; my first three years were very challenging. I was putting out fires, feeling badly about my teaching skills, and not sure where to go for support. It was then that I found Early Childhood Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports…and my world changed. My classroom became a peaceful place, children were learning, and families were empowered and supported. I finally knew what to do to help these children and families. Now, I’m out of the classroom, and since 2007 I’ve spent my time consulting, training, and working with families in their homes. I’m passionate about this work and believe that with the principles of Early Childhood Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports we can help to transform people’s lives for the better. In this keynote, I will discuss implicit bias in early childhood environments. We will look at data around disproportionate discipline, and the effects that implicit bias has on children and their families. We will define just what implicit bias means, discuss tools that may serve to ameliorate the problem, and examine some practices adults can implement that serve to prevent bias.
Ray Soriano is an early childhood and school-age trainer, parent educator, program consultant, teaching musician, and drumming event facilitator. A relentless advocate for children, Ray draws from over 25 years of service to children and families. He is a prevalent trainer and workshop presenter who has shared his passion and expertise with thousands of professionals throughout Washington State. Ray honors diverse perspectives and is committed to social justice.

||Preventing Challenging Behavior in Early Childhood: The challenges of developmentally appropriate practices for children in early childhood, when there are a wide variety of ages and developmental needs can be challenging. In this fun and engaging session we will examine practices that serve to prevent challenging behavior in early childhood environments, as well as ways to meet the academic needs of all children in preschool and kindergarten classrooms. We need more kindness in our world! Children need our guidance in developing their ability to have empathy, to communicate respectfully, and to care for others. Drawing from the science of empathy development, teachings on resiliency and cultural humility, and years of experience as a professional and as a parent, Ray will share ways to foster kindness in young children, for a more compassionate world. - Ray Soriano

|| You've got to have Friends: Friendships in preschool predict many outcomes including a well adjusted adult, a child more resistant to bullying, and even reading by grade 3. In this session we'll examine skills that young children have that lead to friendship and how we teach these skills to kids. We will take a deep dive into routines, and look at how we can embed multiple opportunities for kids to practice these skills, across our day, in the preschool setting.-Tim Andrews
||Recruiting and Supporting Men and Fathers in Early Learning: Children benefit immeasurably when men are actively involved in their growth, development, and learning. Fathers are often disengaged from children’s early learning experiences, and positive, nurturing male influences are absent in early learning environments. CLOCK HOURS: SIX (6) CLOCK HOURS are available and will be provided by NEWESD 101. The cost is $3:00 per clock hour with a minimum of $10:00. The Clock Hours Table is located in the registration area, Bldg. 17, SUB (Foyer). Please sign in at the table at 7:30 a.m. to receive clock hours. Following the conference, information, forms, and evaluations will be emailed to you.
COLLEGE CREDIT (EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY)
ONE (1) college credit is available through EWU, Office of Professional Development. Those interested must attend the mandatory college credit meeting at 7:30 a.m. in Bldg. 17, SUB (Foyer). College credit requires attendance at the entire conference and completion of a summary paper. FEE TOTAL-$65.00. Come prepared with 2 checks, cash or credit-$11.00 to EWC-WAEYC for handling and $54.00 to EWU. Both due the day of the conference. Only those attending the mandatory meeting & the full conference (Keynote and 3 sessions) are eligible for college credit.
